redhouse
came about from a bunch of us just wanting to make a wine that reflects
a wine style that we love drinking time and time again; one where
Australian generosity meets European savoury without the clutter of
overt oak!
At the time of
our first vintage (2000), we didn’t seem to find many wines of this
style in the affordable category…Strangely with the cumulative years of
industry experience between us (which incidentally nearly totals 100
years!), not one of us was remotely attracted to making a $200 a pop
ego icon job. We all wanted a wine which was good value and one we are
happy to drink every day. It is our intention that each new vintage of redhouse will be made 2% better than the last.
Hence, the idea was to source the right grapes that will enable us to make redhouse to a particular, prescribed style. The grapes would not need to come from any particular region. The home for redhouse
is Australia! The varieties essentially will be Shiraz and Grenache as
they are 2 of South Australia’s best varietals but don’t be surprised
if you find some Sangiovese or a bit of something else in the wine from
vintage to vintage. Again, we are looking for the right flavour
profile, structure and complexity!
So
much wine is drunk with food and we are lucky as ‘food’ in Australia is
hugely diverse. To find one wine to complement a wide range of cuisines
is somewhat tricky... we all know. redhouse
is made to appeal to a wine range of foods. Try it with snags on the
BBQ, a Spaghetti Bolognaise, a pizza, a red prawn curry, a Thai beef
salad, Peking duck, a tuna steak or grilled quails with prosciutto and
figs! You’ll see what we mean…
Otherwise, redhouse
just on its own is a great drink. Its juicy cherry-bomb palate is
loaded with pepper and spice. All the generosity is kept in place with
a savoury and zippy finish. With a bit of air, redhouse changes slowly, developing complexities and continues to intrigue us, even over 2 or 3 days.
Essentially, we have made redhouse to be all we, as the people behind redhouse,
want in a great everyday Aussie wine; It is delicious, reliable,
consistent, goes well with a wide range of what we now call
‘Australian’ food and absolutely will more than deliver for the bucks
that you cough up for it! Watch out World… We bring you our
interpretation of the good old Aussie red… or a good new Aussie red… if
you know what we mean.
